Ironic history

Reference to the book 'A concise history of India' by Barbara D. Metcalf, Thomas R. Metcalf

"brought modren British colonical rule with its enlightened leadership, scientific progress"

My input: I feel that the authors need to look up the dictionary for the meaning of enlightened. Putting placeboards forbiding Indians and Dogs in theatres is enlightened? Or perhaps shooting hundreds in the middle of a market place is making scientific progress?

"it was the culmination of the long-term transitions in trade, finance, culture and society that offered the English the very resources they needed to exercise their own remarkable innovations in finance, organisation and military"

My input: This paragraph i found very amusing. I think what it actually means is that the British used their finance, organisation and military to put an end to the trade, finance, culture and society. After all, there has to be a reason that a country which was once called the golden bird becomes a featherless duck after two hundred years of colonisation.

A few laughs....

An old man gets on a crowded bus and no one gives him a seat. As the bus shakes and rattles, the old man's cane slips on the floor and he falls. As he gets up, a seven year old kid, sitting nearby, turns to him and says, "If you put a little rubber thingy on the end of your stick, it wouldn't slip." The old man snaps back: "Well, if your daddy did the same thing seven years ago, I would have a seat today."

Government imposes quota - your views

Amongst the many replies i received on the quotas that the Indian government has confirmed it will impose, i received one thought-provoking one that i feel compelled to display here.

From Poonam, 43, Canada, Toronto.

I want to ask you a question, would you like to be treated by a doctor or get your bridges or building made by a person who doesn't know the basic of math or science? He is there to do and certified to do only coz he was poor and that is the criteria of his selection and that is how he got his degree. What class of services are you expecting? What are the qualities you need in a person to run your hospitals or government offices??

I have great empathy and compassion for poor, we must raise them up from their lowest ebb, but not by compromising on the quality or standards given to an average Indians. How can we raise them up? Encourage them to be competitive like others, once they are in the college, based on their merits, give them absolutely free education until they want to learn and study. Put a condition for the free services: earn the services, it may be an incentive, but they must earn through merit. No where in the world, there are reservations for poor classes, they enter the system through proper channel (by competing) and then they have subsidized fee structure.

Class, religion, poverty should not be the basis of selection, selection should be done based on their mental capacity and then they should be given the pull to achieve the success once they have shown their intelligence. One of the reason I moved away from India was I realized the average Indian has the least of rights in India. We have equal rights all over the world except in India. I was very fervent about moving to India few years back, but realized I may have all the resources, capabilities, or intelligence in the world, I am a second rate Indian in India coz Govt treats me with discrimination if I have earned some money and my basic rights are given to people those do not even know how to respect and be thankful for the services they rec'd on golden platter. I couldn't see a future where I have to fight for every small rights and I realized I have come too far to go back and fight the system.

I may have money to buy anything in India, but if I have to buy a train ticket to travel, I am at the feet of the ticketing clerk. He holds me at ransom, he has rights to not to issue me the ticket, he has rights to throw me out of the line, he has rights to abuse me...who has given him these rights, he is there to serve, he is being paid from the taxes I pay to Govt, but he wants to be served, rather say use me and abuse at the same time! For this again, blame the Govt!!!

V.P. Singh created so many reservation in jobs for unqualified people that they are not being reminded of basic rights of an average Indian and they are more like goons holding the offices at their guns... I am so sorry, very sorry, we Indians cud fight the British and throw them out, but we are still slave to our own politicians and Indians. This is not the vision of India my forefathers had...it is time educated class of India to stand-up for their basic rights, to get the rights which has been given to minorities, poor class...else we might have to drain our brain to the world...who will pick them and use them with respect and dignity....I am with all the kids those are on the roads protesting today...you be there with them too!!

We have the power of media, use it to protect the rights of each and every Indians, not only of the poor or backward class...tax payers should have equal rights (if not more) to the one who doesn't pay any tax at all!

Here is the technical evaluation of the situation:

-You have a kidney stone, dr. suggests Lithotripsy, but he is doesn't know his math well, he calculates incorrect dosage of laser therapy, and induces you with 10x more laser, u definitely lost the stone, but lost the kidney as well as he has irreversibly damaged the kidney with lasers therapy.

-A kid has high fever, dr calculates wrongly the drug dosage, he under treats the child, the infection spread to his blood system, child dies of septicemia.

-Dr's math is so poor, he cannot convert nanograms to micrograms, he treats the thyroid patient with thyroxin and makes an error with decimals, and he kills the patient by poisoning him with over dosage of thyroxin (thyrotoxicosis).

-How about his anatomy, he was never good at biology or chemistry, he doesn't remember which side is the gall bladder or appendix, will you let that dr touch your body or perform surgery on you???

Let's face the consequences hypothetically, are we ready to be treated by a doctor who entered the system from the back door???? If your reply is "NO", then stop it before we lose our kids or parents to these doctors. Would you like to drive a car that has mechanical problem, coz some brainless engineer developed it, it stops in the middle of the road, or goes on fire? Will you cross a bridge that is at the verge of collapsing? How will you know who designed it? A qualified capable engineer or an engineer who got his degree because of his social status??? Choose the "Best" to produce the "Best".

I'd like to thank the many for their comments. I doubt it will make a difference...but at least we know what the government is doing is not right.
